The Theory Test

Learner drivers have to take and pass a Theory Test before they can book driving test. The Theory Test is made up of 50 multiple choice questions and is taken on a computer. Part of the Theory Test is a Hazard Perception Test that tests your reaction to developing situations. It comprises 14 video clips.

You need to pass both parts to pass the test. If you fail one part you have to take both parts again.

The test is taken under exam conditions in a Theory Test centre using a touch screen computer (or you can use a mouse). Headphones are used during the test.

Support for the Theory Test forms part of your Driving Lessons. TheoryTest.net - the UK's leading online Theory Test site. More about the Theory Test from DirectGov.

The Practical Driving Test

The Practical Driving Test covers a variety of situations and road conditions and involves demonstrating the ability to manoeuvre the vehicle safely in both forward and reverse gears. It also includes an eyesight test and vehicle safety questions.

Driving tests are performed from test centres by driving examiners employed by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), an agency of the Department for Transport. Driving tests are conducted on public roads, with the driving examiner directing the candidate around one of many test routes.

During the test, the driving examiner will also assess Eco-Safe Driving techniques. You can commit up to 15 minor faults on the test, but no serious or dangerous faults. Repeated occurrences of a similar minor fault can classed as a habitual problem and be marked a serious fault. ONE serious or dangerous fault means you fail the test.

When you pass the Practical Driving Test you are granted a full UK driving licence.

From 4th October 2010, a new 'Independent Driving' element is part of the Practical Driving Test. During this part of the test (about 10 mins) you have to drive on your own without any instruction or guidances, following traffic signs or a series of directions to a destination.

The West Somerset test centre is in Taunton. The current Practical driving Test fees are £62.00 (daytime Monday to Friday), £75.00 (weekday evenings and weekends). More about the Practical Driving Test from DirectGov.

After you've passed your test and you have a full UK driving license, you can take the Pass Plus Scheme to help you improve your driving - and save money on your car insurance!
